What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
Who Can Apply?
- Seniors aged 65 and older
- Children under 18
- Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate
More groups are expected to be included as the program continues to expand.
CDCP Eligibility Requirements
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- Have no access to private dental insurance
- Have filed your taxes (and your spouse’s/partner’s, if applicable) for the previous year
- Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
You may still qualify even if you have dental benefits through a government social program.

What Services Are Covered?
- Routine exams, X-rays, cleanings (some scaling), fluoride, and sealants
- Basic restorative care like fillings and root canals
- Pain relief for infected or damaged teeth
- Tooth extractions and oral surgery
- Sedation and anesthesia when needed
- Some orthodontic care (subject to specific eligibility and spending limits)

How Much Is Covered?
- Coverage amounts vary based on income:
- If your family net income is under $70,000, the CDCP may cover 100% of eligible services.
- If your income is between $70,000 and $89,999, partial coverage is available, and you may be responsible for a portion of the cost.
Out-of-pocket costs may also apply if:
- Your provider’s fees exceed CDCP reimbursement amounts
- You choose services not covered under the plan
If you already have dental insurance, do not cancel it at this time. You are still considered to have access to insurance, even if you opt out of available coverage.
What’s Not Covered (Yet)?
Some advanced services, such as crowns or major restorative procedures, require pre-authorization and will be eligible once that process becomes available (expected late 2024).
